Resolving Vorticity and Dissipation in Volumetric Turbulent Boundary Layer Measurements using Data Assimilation

A volumetric data assimilation technique for is discussed and applied to volumetric turbulent boundary layer measurements to resolve vorticity and dissipation. The technique couples the Navier- Stokes equations in vorticity-velocity formulation with PTV wind tunnel measurements. Recent turbulent boundary layer studies using volumetric PIV (e.g. tomographic PIV) have stumbled upon the spatial resolution limitations of such measurements. Velocity fluctuations are typically dominated by large-scale events, which can be resolved even with a relatively coarse spatial resolution achievable by tomo-PIV. However, components of the velocity gradient tensor, which govern vorticity and energy dissipation, act at smaller scale and thus require a higher spatial resolution.
